A federal government shutdown began on October 1, 2025. While Grand Teton National Park remains open, staffing and resources are limited. As stewards of this remarkable place, we share the responsibility to care for the park during this time. If you’re planning a visit, please keep the following in mind:
What’s Open:
- Roads and trails remain accessible.
What’s Closed or Limited:
- Entrance gates are unstaffed.
- Visitor centers, ranger programs, and the permitting office are not operating.
- The Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center's (in Moose, WY) outdoor bathroom is open however other flush toilets may or may not be open as they close for the season. Pit toilets will remain open throughout the park.
- Emergency services are limited and only essential staff remain on duty to support health, safety, and resource protection.
Backcountry Permits and Water Access:
- Boats coming from out of state must undergo an Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) inspection before launching on park waters. Learn more HERE.
- Visitors with existing backcountry permit reservations can pick up their permit by calling Dispatch, 307-739-3301. No new backcountry permits are available.
How You Can Help:
- Recreate responsibly: make a plan in advance, pack out all your trash, use restroom facilities before arriving, avoid high-risk activities that could require rescue services, and leave no trace.
- Slow down while driving: wildlife are very active at dawn and dusk during fall.
- Give wildlife space: stay 100 yards away from bears and wolves and 25 yards from moose, bison, and elk.
- Be bear aware: be alert, carry bear spray when on a trail, and know when to use it.
- Support park staff: show respect and appreciation for GTNP employees who are working hard under challenging conditions.
Thank you for doing your part to protect and preserve this extraordinary park!
