The Winter Trail Experience

When winter settles over Grand Teton, the Teton Park Road transforms into one of the most scenic nordic skiing and snowshoeing corridors in the country. Glide through snow-draped forests, across open meadows, and alongside frozen lakes with the Tetons as your backdrop.

The groomed corridor runs from Taggart Lake Trailhead to Signal Mountain Lodge, with grooming typically occurring Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday from mid-December through mid-March, weather and conditions permitting. For updates, follow us on social media @grandtetonfoundation or call the park's road information hotline at 307-739-3682.

Grand Teton National Park Foundation has partnered with the National Park Service for over a decade to groom the Teton Park Road each winter, making this beloved community resource possible season after season.

Activities

Explore the Backcountry

Grand Teton is a world-class destination for backcountry skiing and riding, but the mountains demand respect. Before heading out, always check the current avalanche forecast and snowpack conditions.

  • Review the daily avalanche forecast at the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center
  • Tell someone your plan and expected return time
  • Carry the essential avalanche safety gear: beacon, probe, and shovel

The Foundation supports a dedicated park snow ranger who collaborates with the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center to keep backcountry adventurers informed and safe.

Activities

Spot Wildlife in the Snow

Winter is one of the most magical times to watch wildlife in Grand Teton. With snow on the ground and fewer visitors in the park, animals are more visible and the landscape feels wilder than ever. Look for bison foraging through the snow, wolves moving across the valley, and eagles perched along the river.

Keep an eye out for animal tracks in the snow, identifying them is a fun way to discover who has been active in the area even when the animals themselves are out of sight.

Remember: winter is survival season. Keep your distance and give wildlife the space they need to conserve energy and thrive.

Grand Teton National Park Foundation supports year-round wildlife research and conservation, ensuring the species that make this place extraordinary continue to thrive through every season.
