REMEMBERING GRIZZLY BEAR 399

Honoring the legacy of Grand Teton’s most iconic grizzly bear.

For nearly three decades, grizzly bear 399 captured the hearts of millions around the world, becoming an ambassador for her species and wildlife conservation. Born in 1996, she became one of the most photographed grizzly bears in the world, raising eighteen known cubs during her lifetime and offering visitors a rare glimpse into the lives of wild bears in Grand Teton National Park.

On October 22, 2024, 399 was tragically killed in a vehicle collision at the age of twenty-eight. Her passing was a reminder of the challenges grizzly bears face in a landscape shared with people and the importance of continued conservation efforts.

To honor her legacy, Grand Teton National Park Foundation established the 399 Memorial Fund, dedicated to advancing bear conservation and education in Grand Teton National Park. The fund supports wildlife research, bear-resistant infrastructure, the Wildlife Brigade volunteer force, and Bear Wise Jackson Hole, helping protect bears and promote safe coexistence between people and wildlife.

Through the 399 Memorial Fund, her memory will continue to inspire conservation efforts for generations to come. Please consider making a gift today. Thank you!
